Artist Statement: A vast portion of my 2010 summer was spent dealing with the loss of my father. It was amazing to me to see, hear and feel the care and love that our community felt for my family and I during this time of sorrow and one tangible was the written condolences I received. In looking at these as an artist, I was fascinated by the color palette, textures and text that was incorporated both from the commercial to the individual. Deconstructing and reassembling only the meaningful pieces created an image of layers that personally reflects the many individuals who took time to express grief, prayers, sympathy and joy for the life lived. Important to me, the meaning of the handwritten messages and thoughts conveyed infuse this piece with personal, emotional and spiritual context as a son, father, husband, artist as a symbol of life.
